A Brief History of the Community Woman's Club
The Community Woman’s Club is a historic U.S. building located at 5 Rosa L Jones Drive, Cocoa, Florida. The Central Church of Christ initially constructed the building circa 1950 and the Community Woman’s Club of Cocoa purchased it on June 8, 1966. The address was originally 5 Poinsett Drive, but the name of the road changed to Rosa L Jones Drive sometime in the late 2000s. The Brevard Heritage Council placed the building in the Brevard Register of Historic Buildings.
A group of local women founded the Community Woman's Club (CWC) in June, 1922. They joined the Federation of Women's Clubs the same year. Dues were $2.00 a year and meetings were in private homes. These ladies were instrumental in starting the Cocoa Public Library, Wuesthoff hospital, causing a cleanup of the local jail, sponsoring the local girl scouts, and aiding in highway and city beautification. In recent years, members of the club formed the "Friends of the Library" to continue supporting literacy.
During the war years, they worked with the Red Cross, sold war stamps and war bonds, helped distribute ration cards, helped plan ways to conserve gas and aided in the National War Fund Drive.
In 1963, they purchased the current clubhouse and after renovations, began using the building for meetings in 1966.
CWC is currently active in supporting The Children's Hunger Project, Central Brevard Sharing Center, New Life Mission, Life Recaptured, Brevard Schools Foundation Supply Zone for Teachers, Palace Retirement Home, Lawndale Museum, Camp Boggy Creek, and many more.
For many years, the Club has offered an annual college scholarship for young women graduating from a local high school.
